Kit Room Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I loan equipment?
- Make a booking on ORB.
- Collect the equipment within 1 hour of the booking, or before the store closes for the day (which ever comes first).
- Return the equipment before the end of the booking to the site you loaned it from.
What happens if I am more than 1 hour late to collect my item(s)?
Your booking will be cancelled and you’ll need to remake it if the item is in stock.
How long can I book equipment?
You can find out the loan durations for each item by pressing the info icon on the item in the catalogue.
Items are broken into 3 main loan durations:
On-site loans
8 hours - Must not leave the building
This include items like:
- Drawing machines
- Larger robots
- High end projectors
Off-site loans
3 day - Can be taken home
This include items like:
- Basic projectors
- Cameras
- Tripods
- Lenses
- HCI devices like Kinect and Leap Motion
Component loans
3 months - Can be taken home
This includes items like:
- Microcontrollers and single board computers
- Electronic components
- Cables and adapters
- Most rechargable batteries
Can I renew/extend my booking?
Yes, you can renew your booking by bringing all parts of the item into the Kit Room or the Technical Office for inspection. Staff can then extend the booking by the same duration again as long as no one else is waiting for it.
We do not accept online/email renewals as we need you to bring the equipment back so we can check it’s being looked after.
What happens if I don’t return the equipment on time?
Please return equipment on time, as it can have a significant impact on other students who need that item. We’re really trying to avoid introducing a fine scheme for late returns, so please don’t abuse the system.
In the first instance, your account will be suspended until you can explain to either Pete or Tom why you didn’t return the item on time.
Students who intentionally or repeatedly abuse the system will be permanently banned from borrowing equipment.
If you fail to return equipment before the end of your course, we will ask you to pay for it, and can if necessary take further proceedings.
