Other Resources: Copyright, Data Protection, etc

Modern research and knowledge exchange activities involve a vast range of methods that encompass many ways of gathering data, working with participants and audiences. Here we will gather some resources that you might find useful navigating the issues that arise.

If you are using existing material created by a person outside of your research team you need to be aware of issues around copyright. The UAL Library Services copyright page is a wonderful resource on this topic including details of exemptions for use of copyrighted material for non-commercial research or machine learning: https://arts.ac.libguides.com/copyright/introduction

Data Protection

All data gathered from participants (whether during primary data collection or from existing sources, i.e. secondary data) is subject to the UK General Data Protection regulations (GDPR). GDPR protects an individual’s control of and rights over their personal information. You should only gather data that is necessary for your research project and ensure that individuals are not identifiable unless required by the research question. All research and KE data should be stored on UAL machines or online storage (e.g. OneDrive and Sharepoint) where possible. If in doubt about your data, please contact cci-cresc@arts.ac.uk.
