What is a computer?
A computer by definition, is a device for processing, storing, and displaying information. (1), Computer systems can generally be split into hardware and software. Hardware is the physical equipment that forms the machine and the software is the range of programs that process data and display outputs.
Our need and use of computers have changed over the years, and as such, we have different types of computers, which can be generally classified by size, power and usage.
Supercomputers
Supercomputers are very expensive and are employed for specialized applications that require immense amounts of mathematical calculations. For example, weather forecasting requires a supercomputer. Other uses of supercomputers scientific simulations, (animated) graphics, fluid dynamic calculations, nuclear energy research, electronic design, and analysis of geological data.
